NAPO in the Schools

Guiding the Elementary School Student

NAPO in the Schools is a community outreach program aimed at getting students to have a conversation about being organized with their teachers and parents.  The presentation is geared toward Elementary School students.  The program consists of a 30 to 45 minute presentation given by a Professional Organizer that introduces the students to the concept of being organized and how it benefits your daily routine.  Two characters, Hazel or Drake start off disorganized. Through an interactive presentation the organizer and students come up with ways to get the characters items sorted and organized. The idea is to start a dialogue about these concepts while kids are young and get them interested in learning different ways to be organized. Jennifer provides these presentations to Elementary Schools in South Florida.  Contact her for more information on the program or to book her for a presentation HERE.  To find an organizer in your area go to NAPO’s Directory of participating organizers HERE.

Why Students Need to be Organized

Today we live in a different world and some of the changes in technology, family structures, and curriculum make it difficult for the average student to succeed if he or she does not have strong organizing skills.  Kids are inundated with text messages, emails, voice mails and answering all these is a lot of pressure.  It is also more common than ever for kids to live between two homes increasing their chances of leaving textbooks or assignments in one place or another.  Schools are changing to year round schedules or fractured school days to accommodate over crowding.  It is hard enough for students to transition from elementary school structure to high school where they have to start moving themselves and their supplies from one classroom to another managing multiple books and assignments.  These are just a few of the factors that make it important for parents and teachers to reinforce their kids with strong organizational habits.  More and more a lack of these skills play a major role in a student’s ability to succeed in school.

Tools & Techniques for the Organized Student

Hiring an organizer to work with your child will teach him or her core skills for staying organized at school with techniques for locker and backpack organization.  We will discuss tools that aid in keeping track of their assignments and paper in the classroom.  At home the we will create a well stocked and efficient workspace that has proper storage for papers and projects that accessible for mid term and finals prep.  They will also learn time management which encompasses how to keep track of their commitments, gauge their work load, plan and prioritize.  Students will gain an overall understanding of what it means to be accountable through this training.  Once a student is armed with these skill sets they develop a sense of control over their schedules and papers which instills a sense confidence.  This is a wonderful back to school gift.  Remember, it is never too early to teach a child how to be organized!

Study Habits for the Efficient Student

Another way to prepare your student is to teach them how to be organized and efficient with classwork.  Students learn how to keep track of their assignments with binders and planners.  They break down assignments into small tasks and keep track of when and where to turn them in.  Once the assignments are given back to the student they learn how to store them so they are prepared when it is time to study for their mid-terms or finals.  There are many tricks and tips, tools and practices that show your child how to be ready for the the classroom and complete their homework.  Training proper study habits removes feelings of overwhelm due to disorganization and allows a child to focus on what they are learning.  This could be one of the best gifts you can give your child as he or she prepares for school.

Organizing for Teachers

The first rule of thumb is: It is never to early to teach kids how to be organized. Teachers can use an organizer to prepare their classroom and learn techniques to reinforce organizational habits in students K-12.  A classroom that contains storage for students supplies, completed assignments or projects in progress teaches by example some of the ways students can be organized.  Teachers can show kids how to take notes, where to keep their completed assignments for parents to see or to reference later for mid-terms or finals. These are just a few of the ideas and practices teachers can integrate into the daily routine of the class. Those who do will not only help students overcome the barriers of disorganization and focus on what is being taught but they will prepare them for the demands of higher education and adulthood responsibilities.  Consult a professional organizer today because teachers can play a big role in the development of organizational skills in their students.
